Why use a drill depth stop?

Depth stops come with drills that are of good quality for a reason. Simply put, they let you drill to a certain depth. They are especially useful for drilling holes for screws in wood, drywall, or stone. Most of the time, we’ll have a normal 10mm drill bit in our drill for this kind of drilling, but it’s important that we don’t drill too deep, or the rawlplug will be too deep and won’t hold as well.

How to Use a Drill Bit Depth Stop

Once the drill bit is in the chuck, pull the depth stop back until it is the same length as the bit.

Then, line up the rawlplug or other wall plug with the drill’s side handle. Mark where the end of the rubber plug is on the depth stop with your thumb, and then slide the depth stop back to where your thumb is.

Now, measure the raw plug against the end of the depth stop. The plug should now line up with the end of your drill bit.

Keep in mind that the rawlplug or other type of wall plug is made so that the screw can stick out a few millimeters past the end so that it can grip the surface you are cutting into.

Now you’re ready to drill, knowing that the hole will be the right depth for the wall plug and the screw you’re using to fix it.
