Things to Know About Welding
Welding is the process of joining together two or more pieces using heat, pressure, or both. As the pieces cool, a joint forms between them.
This method of making things is usually used on metals and thermoplastics. Welding is similar to soldering and brazing in that it needs a filler material or binder to hold the two materials together.
There are four main types of welding:
- MIG
- TIG
- STICK
- FLUX
What you need to know about welding:
Welding works by joining two or more materials (usually metal) together using a welding source, filler materials, heat, and pressure.
There are many different kinds of welding, like arc, stick, mig, tig, etc. The type of welding you choose depends on the metals you want to join together and the tools you have.
Welding can be used for anything from small jobs around the house to large manufacturing and repair jobs.

Welding phrase dictionary
You’ll see us use these words and phrases throughout this book. Here is what they mean:
Electrode: conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an item, substance, or region.
Weld pool : In metalworking, a weld pool is the small, usable part of a weld where the base metal has melted and is ready to be mixed with filler material.
Electric arc : An electrical breakdown of a gas that causes a long-lasting electrical explosion. In nature, electric sparks show up as lightning.
Weld bead : the metal put into the joint by the process and the filler wire used
Filler wire : a metal used to make a joint. When heated, this metal turns liquid and melts, so it can flow into the space between two parts that fit together closely.
What is Mig welding?
MIG welding stands for Metal Insert Gas welding, and it uses electricity to melt and join metal. This quick and easy method is great for beginners because it is by far the easiest one. MIG welding is easy to learn, and you can use one machine to do several different types of welding.
Mig welding machines work with a continuous wire electrode that is wound on a loop inside the machine. Mig welding uses electricity to melt the electrode wire, which is then applied to make a weld. Once the heat is removed, the weld pool cools and forms into a new piece of fused metal. This is how you attach one piece of metal to another. Most of the time, a shielding gas is needed when Mig welding to protect the weld pool from contamination.
Using electricity, a short circuit is made between two electrode wires.
Mig welding is one of the most popular kinds of welding.

What is Mag welding?
MAG welding is a type of gas metal arc welding (GMAW) that uses heat from a DC electric arc between a disposable metal electrode and a workpiece. The electrode and workpiece melt together to form a weld pool that fuses to form a joint.
Mag is short for metal active gas.
What is the difference between MIG and MAG welding?
Mig welding and mag welding are both GMAW techniques. Shielding gas is needed in both cases, but the shielding gas is made of different things.
As a protective gas, mig welding uses inert gases, such as argon. The pure inert gas keeps the protective gas from breaking up during welding. No outside chemical element is mixed into the metal bead. Mig welding can’t change the weld bead’s chemical makeup or its qualities.
As a shielding gas, mag welding uses a mixture of an active gas, like oxygen or CO2, and a neutral gas, like nitrogen. During welding, the electric spark produces a lot of heat, which causes the shielding gas to break apart. Because of this, chemical elements like oxygen or carbon are drawn into the weld bead. Because of this process, mag welding can change the chemical composition and qualities of the weld bead.
Welding is the best way to join non-ferrous metals, like aluminium.
Mag welding is best for joining ferrous metals like mild or stainless steel.
What is Tig welding?
Tig welding, which stands for tungsten inert gas welding, is a type of GMAW that uses electricity to melt and join metal. Tig welding can be used to join many different types of metal.
Tig welding is a stable arc welding method that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and an inert gas in the welding arc to make high-quality welds. It uses a welding spark to join two pieces of metal together.
Tig welding is often used because it is versatile, clean, and doesn’t need much finishing. However, it isn’t the easiest welding method to learn or master.
Difference between Mig and Tig welding
Tig welding needs a different filler material to be fed onto the weld with one hand while the torch is used with the other. With MIG welding, a wire electrode is repeatedly fed through the spool gun to make the weld.
Tig welding can be hard for people who haven’t done it before because they have to do multiple things at once.
A Mig welder can weld stronger materials and do it faster. Tig welding works best with thinner metals and smaller jobs.
Since tig welding leaves a very clean and neat finish, it is often used in structural or artistic applications.
Tig welding pros
- Very precise
- Clean/neat finish
- Can be used without filler material
- Lower maintenance
Tig welding cons
- It is more expensive as it is a slower process with a lower deposition rate.
- More complex and requires a more experienced operator.
Tig welding applications
- Welding thinner metals
Mig welding pros
- A faster process
- Not as expensive as Tig welding.
- Produces a clean weld.
Mig welding cons
- Can produce heavy smoke and fumes
- Hard to use outdoors due to gases involved
- Can cause rust deposits
- Not as strong as Tig welding
Mig welding applications
- Welding bigger, thicker pieces of metal
- New to welding
- Working at difficult angles
- You want a smoother process.
What is Arc welding?
Arc welding is the only way to safely join something underwater. In arc welding, an electric arc is used to create heat, which melts and joins the metals.
Can you weld cast iron?
It depends on how good the cast iron.
There are four types of cast iron: grey iron, white iron, ductile iron, and pliable iron. White iron is the only type of cast iron that you can’t weld. Even so, it’s important to remember that cast iron is much harder to weld than carbon steel.
If you want to join two pieces of cast iron together, arc welding is the best way to do it, as long as you use the right welding tools.
What are inverter welders?
Inverter welders are built for voltage regulation. They turn AC power into a smaller DC voltage that can be used.
Traditional standard transformers use a lot more energy than inverter welders. When it comes to making heat and using energy, they are a great option for traditional welders. In fact, they can produce the same amount of energy with up to 30% less power input.

Things to remember:
Always keep your work area clean and organised. If you don’t clean the welding pool, dirt, grease, and oil can get into it. This can cause contamination, which can lead to bad welding results.
Protective equipment is important.
Wear a welding helmet at all times, and get the best one you can. If you’re not careful, welding can hurt your eyes.
