Makita DTW1001 and DTW1002 Brushless Cordless Impact Wrenches: What Are the Differences?
The Japanese power tool giants are clearly very proud of the history of their cordless impact wrenches, pointing out that they have become the standard in the steel erection industry, heavy engineering, plant maintenance, and for the pit-stop teams in the World Touring Car Championship and the all-electric Formula E World Championship.
These are all impressive accomplishments, but what do they give you? Let’s look at each part.

Everything you need to know about the Makita DTW1001 Impact Wrench
Starting with the DTW1001, we have a machine with a 34″ square drive that can make a tightening torque of 1,050 Nm.
On top of that, the machine has “nut-busting” power of 1,700 nm. This will make it easy to open even the tightest screws. When the trigger is pulled, the nut-busting torque kicks in for the first five hits. After that, it goes back to the normal 1,050 nm. Still can’t get the nut off? Let go of the trigger and try again.
Great feature, and it’s found on both tools
With impact sockets held on the 34″ square drive by a pin and ring, the DTW1001 can tighten an M30 normal bolt or an M24 high-tensile bolt.

Makita DTW1002Z Review
The DTW1002 has the more typical 1/2-inch square drive and a friction-push fit. It can tighten up to 1,000 nm. Like the DTW1001, it has a “nut-busting” power of 1,700 nm.
A lot of control, but also a lot of power.
Power control is very important, and both tools have an electric drive brake built into the motor that stops the drive as soon as you take your finger off the variable speed trigger. All of the usual Makita practical features are there, like the soft rubber grip.
On both types, there are two LED lights under the trigger that glow for a while after the trigger is pulled. But if you press the power button on the battery casing, you can choose whether the lights are always on or always off.
And speaking of the battery case, you’ll notice that this one looks a little different from other LXT cordless tools. And part of that is because the tool has a built-in area that dampens vibrations so that they don’t damage the batteries when the tool is in use.

With the selection button on top of the battery case, you have a lot of power over how the motor drives. Through this switch, the power can be set electrically to give a hard, medium, or soft impact.
The motor has speeds of 1,800 rpm, 1,000 rpm, and 900 rpm, in that order. With 500 Nm, 750 Nm, and 1,050 Nm (or 1,000 Nm on the DTW1002) of power per setting.
The brushless motor is clearly the best thing about both cordless tools. It can be driven by Makita’s LTX batteries, but the 5-Ah packs will give you the best results.
