Handsaw Buying Guide
Safatco Guide to Buying Hand Saws
When getting a hand saw, you should think about what you will use it for, how often you will use it, and what materials you will be cutting.
Hand saws can be used to cut wood and logs roughly or to make intricate, curved cuts in wood. They can be used professionally or just at home and in the yard. Hand saws are often used to cut hardwood, softwood, chipboard, plywood, and MDF, but that’s not all they can be used for. It’s important to use the right saw for your material to get the result you want.
There are different kinds of hand saws, and in this buying guide from Safatco, we’ll help you figure out which one is best for your needs. We’ll talk about what to look for in a high-quality hand saw, how to choose the right hand saw based on its specs and your needs, what kind of hand saw is best for your job, the best brands of hand saws, how to take care of your hand saw, and some of Safatco’s top picks and best-sellers.

Construction
Most hand tools are best chosen based on how they are put together. When it comes to hand saws, things are the same. A good hand saw is made of strong materials, like hardened steel, so that it will last and be easy to use.
How well the saw works will depend on the quality and material of the blade. Hardpoint saws are famous. Their hardened teeth make them very strong and durable, and the fact that they are made from high-carbon steel speaks for itself.
Many of the hand saws at Safatco are made of hardpoint steel, which means they are very strong and stay sharp for a long time.
The handle can also make a big difference. Most high-quality saws have well-made, comfortable grips that reduce friction and make long-term use feel less hard.

What’s in the numbers?
There are many different sizes, shapes, and numbers of teeth on hand saws. This is a very important issue, and it all depends on what you want to cut and how you want it to look.
Hand Saw Length
Have you noticed that there are different lengths of handsaws? Depending on the type of saw, they can be anywhere from 6″ to 12″ and 22″ to 24″ or even longer. Long saws are made for long strokes, and short saws are made for quick strokes. With a long hand saw, you have to move your arm all the way around, but with a shorter saw, you only have to move your arm a short distance. Most of the time, longer saws are better and will get the job done faster, but this again depends on the task you are doing.
There will be more teeth on a longer saw, but not always more tip, which we will talk about below.
The number of teeth is important.
If you want to make smaller, more precise cuts in wood, you’ll need a different kind of hand saw than the one you’d use to make rough cuts. We’ll help you understand what each handsaw is used for.
The number of teeth on a handsaw is an important part of how it cuts. With more teeth, the cut will be cleaner and more accurate. With fewer teeth, you can cut quickly, but the cut won’t be as clean and straight.
TPI (teeth per inch) or PPI (points per inch) measures the number of teeth on a hand saw. The more teeth there are, the better the finish, and the higher the TPI or PPI.
Different Types of Hand Saws
Here is a list of some of our favourite types of hand saws and what they are best for:
Coping Saw: Coping saws are the most useful hand saws because they can cut through hard and soft wood, plastic, clay, and metals that aren’t made of iron. You can change their thin, narrow blades as often as you need to, which will save you money in the long run. You can buy replacement blades for coping saws here. Due to the fact that they are smaller and thinner than other hand saws, they are great for making curved cuts that would be hard to do with other hand saws. Cutting skirting is one of our favourite things to do with these saws. Since the blade is so small, it is easy to cut round shapes.
Bow saw: Bow saws are made to cut quickly and aggressively, which means they will leave a rougher finish. Most of the time, they are used to cut wood limbs and logs.
Tenon saw: With a tenon saw, you can cut small pieces of hard or soft wood straight and accurately. Because they have a high tip, they give the wood a smooth finish. The blade on these saws also doesn’t bend, so you have full control over the cut.
Pruning saw: Most of the time, pruning saws are used in the yard to make rough cuts in tree branches and other plants.
Regular universal hand saw: Hand saws are great for cutting wood in many different ways. They have a big blade for cutting wood quickly and straight. However, because of the size of the blade, this type of saw is not good for making smaller, more accurate cuts. As was said above, you would need a coping saw to do this. Hand saws for general use are used both on the job and around the house. They can be used in so many ways and can definitely do the job.
So, those are a few of the most important types of hand saws and what they are used for. You can also shop here for a variety of plasterboard saws, hacksaws, and general-purpose saws.

Hand Saw Care Guide
To get the most use out of your hand saw, you need to take care of it regularly.
It needs to stay dry, so when it’s not being used, put it somewhere dry and out of the way to keep it from rusting.
Make sure the wood you are cutting doesn’t have any nails in it. Cutting into metal will quickly dull the saw blade, so it won’t work as well and will need to be replaced sooner.
Hold on to the cardboard or plastic sheath that comes with your hand saw and put it over the blade when you’re not using it. This will keep it dry and keep it from hurting the other tools in your kit.
Use the saw only to cut the things it was made to cut. If you use a wood saw to cut metal, you will do a lot of damage to it.
Can you sharpen a handsaw?
You can sharpen a hand saw with a vice and a metal file, but this takes a long time when you think about how much the saw costs. Handsaws are cheap, so when the blade gets dull, most people just buy a new one. They are good for making longer cuts and are easy to replace.
Hacksaws, bow saws, and coping saws can all be bought at Safatco with extra saw blades that can be swapped out as needed.
