Cordless Jigsaw Buying Guide
In our guide to getting a cordless jigsaw, we show you all the things you should look for and think about when buying an 18-volt jigsaw. Even the best 18-volt jigsaws from DeWalt, Makita, and other brands that you can buy at Safatco are ones that we suggest.

The History of the Cordless Jigsaw
Albert Kaufmann, an engineer at the Scintilla AG company in Solothurn, Switzerland, got the idea for jigsaws from the way a sewing machine worked. This was more than 60 years ago. Kaufmann switched out the needle on his wife’s sewing machine for a saw blade. This gave him the ability to cut wood in a very precise way.
As time went on, the jigsaw became one of the most famous power tools on the market. Since 1954, when Bosch took over Scintilla AG, it has sold around 20 million jigsaws around the world. We’ll show you how to buy a portable jigsaw in this buying guide.

Corded or cordless?
We’ll assume that you want to buy a portable jigsaw for the purposes of this buying guide. The main reason to buy a portable jigsaw is that it is easy to use and gives you more freedom. You can use it anywhere, especially in places or situations where you don’t have access to a power source.
This advantage, however, needs to be weighed against the main drawback of any cordless or battery-powered power tool: batteries need to be recharged, and how often you need to recharge your cordless jigsaw depends on what you’re using it for.
For example, when cutting harder materials, the jigsaw’s motor has to work harder, which uses up the battery faster. So, if you usually cut hard materials for long amounts of time, you might want to think about getting a corded jigsaw.
There are many “naked” forms of jigsaws on the market. This means that if you already have Makita 18-volt lithium-ion batteries, you can use them on their naked DJV180Z 18-volt jigsaw. This is especially helpful if you already have several lithium-ion batteries from the same company. You can use one battery while the other is charged.
In conclusion, a cordless jigsaw is great for making cuts quickly and without being tethered to a power source. The wireless power tools we already own will likely affect our choice of cordless jigsaw.

What Features Should You Consider When Buying a Cordless Jigsaw?
Manufacturer:
As was already said, our choice of cordless jigsaw may depend in part on how much we like a certain brand. If we’ve already bought a lithium-ion cordless power tool, we might want to keep buying more wireless tools from the same company.
This gives us the ability to swap batteries between tools, as long as the tools we buy use the same battery power (10.8, 14V, 18V, etc.).
Power and Speed:
How much power you need from your portable jigsaw will depend on what you will be using it for. The easy rule is that you need more power if the thing you’re cutting is thicker or harder. On a cordless jigsaw, power is defined in volts (V), so keep an eye out for the voltage rating. Keep an eye on the battery’s Ah number, which shows how much power it can hold.
The higher the number, the better, because that means the battery can hold more charge, giving you longer run times based on what you’re using it for.
But speed is a different story. The number of turns or strokes a puzzle makes per minute serves as a gauge of its speed.
The speed of your jigsaw will either be set or it will change. For rare use, a jigsaw with only one speed will be enough. But it’s important to be able to control the speed of the blade for a few reasons:
- If the jigsaw blade moves too quickly while cutting, it can burn or damage some materials.
- To prevent vibration, it’s best to cut materials like wood as quickly as possible.
So, a variable speed dial that lets us control the speed could be an important feature for us, based on what we’ll use our cordless jigsaw for.
When you look while you cut, you need to slow down your cutting speed. Your choice of blade is also important, so please read our guide on how to buy jigsaw and sabre saw blades.
When you need to cut through thicker or heavier materials, you should think about power and speed. The cut is deeper or wider when the blade’s stroke length is longer. For deep, thick cuts, you need a motor with more speed and a faster RPM. Check the voltage and RPM of the portable jigsaw you are thinking about buying.
Please look at the list of electric jigsaws below and pay attention to the voltage, battery Ah, and RPM.
In conclusion, your choice of cordless jigsaw will likely be based on your loyalty to a certain brand. You should also think about what you’ll be using it for most before deciding between a single-speed and a variable-speed model. Also, keep in mind the power output vs. the type of cuts you’ll be making.

What is Pendulum Action?
“Should I buy a pendulum or an orbital?” is a question people often ask about jigsaws. The answer is easy: pendulum and orbital are basically the same thing. The jigsaw blade moves in a circle, which is what the word “pendulum” means. The blade doesn’t just move up and down; it also goes back and forth.
What’s the point? This feature will let you cut with more force, especially through thicker or harder materials. It also lets you handle the blade much better as you cut.
If it doesn’t have this feature, a jigsaw will have a hard time cutting through thicker or harder materials. You’ll have to push harder on the jigsaw, which will cause the blade to get too hot and burn or scorch the material. The blade moves in and out of the cutting face as the pendulum swings back and forth. This lets the blade cool as it cuts. This could mean that the blades on your jigsaw will last longer.
Most jigsaws have between 4 and 5 steps for the pendulum, and all of them can be changed with a switch on the side. The more stages there are, the more power you have over how the blade moves around.

Base Plate:
If you can change the base plate of your cordless jigsaw, you will be able to make angled cuts of up to 45°. Check to see if the jigsaw has a base plate protector. This is usually a slip-on piece of plastic that keeps the metal base plate from scratching your work surface.
Extras:
More benefits are better. One of these must be that the jigsaw can blow dust away from your cutting line and has a job light built in. It’s important to be able to see the cutting line. Some of our portable jigsaws help by blowing the dust away, but we also want some kind of light to shine on our workpiece.
Look for some kind of computer control for the motor. This covers the motor while you’re cutting, keeping it from getting too hot and extending the life of the machine as a whole. Bosch’s electric jigsaws have electronic motor protection (EMP), and the lithium-ion batteries they make have electronic cell protection (ECP).
Another important thing to look for is a jigsaw blade that can be changed quickly and without tools. After cutting through a piece of lumber, no one wants to touch a hot jigsaw blade, so being able to quickly change the blade without a tool is always a plus.
Check out the extra features that the portable jigsaw you want to buy has. Check if you’re getting as many features as possible for your money, not just how much it can cut, etc.

To sum up this buying guide, keep these things in mind:
- What electric lithium-ion tools do you already have? This may affect which cordless jigsaw you buy next. If you already have batteries, buying a “body-only” or “naked” form will save you money.
- What kinds of jobs are you most likely to have? If you need to make big cuts in thick, hard materials, you’ll need a motor with a lot of power (volts), a lithium-ion battery with a lot of amps, and a blade with a lot of speed (RPM). No matter what, it’s important to be able to control the speed of the blade for safe, accurate cuts.
- A pendulum means that the blade goes both forward and backward and up and down.
- The stroke of the saw blade tells you how deep you can cut. Depending on the type of blade, the longer the move, the deeper the cut can go.
