What is a Hole Saw?

The hole saw is an extension for power drills that has a saw blade in the shape of a cylinder and is used to cut out round holes. They are very popular in the electrical and water industries, and they work much better than flat and twist drill bits when you need to make big, deep holes or make holes bigger.

In this Safatco guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about hole saws, including how to use them and where they’re best suited.

Hole Saws explained

A hole saw can make holes that are much bigger than what a regular drill bit can. They make a hole in the item without cutting the material in the center.

The hole saw is attached to your power drill by an arbor, which is used to hold other parts of moving tools. The arbor can hold a drill bit so that you can make a test hole in the material before you cut it. This will cut down on walking. This is helpful but not necessary, and not all hole saws need one.

Since a hole saw only cuts around the edge of the object and not through it, it is often the best choice for making larger holes. When compared to a normal or flat drill bit, the same hole can be made much faster and with less power.

There are many different sizes and diameters of hole saws, and they can be used to cut a wide range of objects. When getting a hole saw or a hole saw set, it’s important to think about the materials you’ll be cutting and the finish you want. How big of a hole a hole saw can cut is based on how big the saw is, and how deep it can cut is based on how long the working length is. Some may come with an arbor that can be taken off, some with an arbor that can’t be taken off, and some with no arbor at all. In this case, you would have to buy one on its own. We have a huge range of hole saws, arbors, and hole saw sets at Safatco.

Parts of a Hole Saw

As was said above, the hole saw has cutting teeth, slots, and sometimes a starter drill and arbor.

The tooth pitch can change or stay the same, and the teeth are generally set at an angle of 60° to make it easy to cut through the material. When the space between the teeth changes, the pitch does, too. This makes the cut smoother and makes the blade wear less. When the distance between these two points stays the same, the pitch is said to be steady. They cut a little slower than variable-pitch saws, but they cut more precisely.

There are different TPIs (teeth per inch) on different hole saws. The higher the TPI, the longer it takes to cut, but the finish is better. The less TPI, the faster the cut, but the less smooth it will be.

It’s helpful to know that the hole saw is less likely to tear your workpiece if the TPI is larger. When the TPI is low, this is more likely to happen. Most of the time, we say that 1-4 teeth per inch is a low TPI and that 10 or more teeth per inch is a high TPI.

You will see that the sides of each hole have slots. The reason for them is to let chips and dust out.

How to Use a Hole Saw

There are many ways to use a hole saw. Typical ones include, but are not limited to, putting in drain lines and making holes for pipes and wiring.

Once you know how big of a hole you need to cut and have picked a hole saw that works with the object you’re cutting, it’s pretty easy to use one. Follow these steps:

  • Put the arbor into the hole, sawing through the back.
  • Screw the hole saw onto the thread of the arbor until it is tight.
  • Place the arbor in the drill chuck and tighten it until you have a good grip on it.
  • If your arbor doesn’t come with a pilot drill bit, you may want to make a pilot hole yourself (but you don’t have to).
  • Place the hole saw where you want to make the cut.
  • Start by digging slowly, and then gradually speed up the drill.
  • From time to time, pull the hole saw out of the hole to get rid of dust.
  • Once you’ve drilled the hole you need, clean out your hole saw.

That’s all there is to it. Please keep in mind that it’s important to always make sure you’re using a drill with enough power to cut holes and that you have the right PPE.

A hole saw is used to cut big, round holes in wood, plasterboard, plastic, metal, and other materials. You can shop for hole saws and hole saw sets from many well-known brands at Safatco today.
