Parts of the Table Saw

First, let’s look at a common model of a table saw so you can get to know its parts. We’ve written down some of the most important parts and told you what they’re for.

Rip Fence: When the table saw is in use, the rip fence acts as a cutting guide. Its main purpose is to keep you safe. It generally goes all the way to the end of the table saw, which lets you cut bigger pieces of material. It is usually attached to the right side of the blade.

Blade Guard: A key safety feature that keeps wood from falling on the moving blade and protects your fingers

Riving knife: a very important part of a table saw that stops the saw from kicking back. When the height is changed, it moves up and down with the blade.

Mitre Gauge: It lets you make cuts at different angles, like mitre cuts and other cuts.

Blade Angle and Height Adjustment: You can set the cutting height and angle of the blade to your liking (within the limits of the model you have, of course). It usually looks like a “wheel” that you can turn and move to change the height of the blade for cutting bigger pieces or the angle of the blade for making bevel cuts.

Now that we know what the main parts of a table saw are, let’s talk about how to use them.

How to adjust the blade height on a table saw

The most important step is to know how to change how high the blade is. What good is a table saw if it can’t be set to the right height and angle? This step is easy, and we’ve already talked a little bit about it. Always start by unplugging or turning off your computer. Safety is the most important thing when you’re dealing with sharp blades that spin fast. Then, all you have to do is turn the front wheel the way you want the blade to go. Usually, you turn the wheel anticlockwise to lower the blade and clockwise to raise it. You can use a combination measure to make sure that the blade is at the exact height you want it to be for the size of cut you want. However, we recommend that the blade height be about one tooth size above the material you are cutting. This will make sure the cut is clean and safe.

How to change the blade on a table saw

Just take out the table insert, set the height of the blade so that it’s at its highest point and you can see the nut, and then use the spanner or wrench that came with your table saw to unscrew the nut. It should be easy to pull the blade out.

To put a saw blade back in, just do these steps backwards.

How to make a mitre cut with a table saw

It’s easy to make a mitre cut with a table saw.

When you want to join two pieces of wood together, you use a mitre cut. The cut is usually made at an angle, like 45° in this case.

To make a mitre cut with a table saw, you just have to set the mitre guide or gauge to the angle you want to cut at (45°) and change the height of your blade. This is shown step by step in our movie, so you can see exactly how to adjust the guide and make the cut.

Always move the wood slowly and gently towards the blade and push it through until the cut is done. If you are making a tight cut, you may want to use push sticks to keep your hands from getting too close to the blade.

How to make a rip cut with a table saw

Table saws can do more than just cut angles. They can also cut straight lines.

You should now be able to use your table saw quickly and safely. Always be careful when using power tools, and if you need more help, we’ll be glad to give it.

How to use a table saw safely

Table saws are big power tools, and we all know that they can be dangerous if they aren’t used properly, so here are some top tips for using them:

  • Make sure the height of the blade is right for the cut you want to make. The blade should never be higher than 6 mm above the piece you’re cutting. Doing this not only ensures that the blade will make the best cut possible, but it also keeps your fingers safe if your hand slips and comes close to the blade.
  • Make sure there are no things on the desk. If the tabletop is dirty or rough, you’ll have to push harder on the piece you’re cutting, which puts you in danger.
  • When people use power tools too much, they often hurt themselves. The more you think you know about your tools, the more likely it is that you’ll set them up and use them without much thought. Be careful when you use your table saw.
  • Professional table saws that are of good quality come with push sticks. Use yours because it will keep your hands away from the blade, which is the most dangerous part of the table saw. A saw blade that spins at more than 3000 rpm is made to cut wood quickly and easily. It will actually turn you into a pile of mush. You can find them online if your table saw doesn’t come with one.
  • The maker puts the blade guard, splitter, and/or riving knife on the table saw for a reason: to keep the person using the saw safe. So don’t take them off unless you need to take the riving knife off to make a hidden cut. But once you’ve cut it, put it back together. It keeps your object from kicking back and keeps you safe from the back of the blade.
  • Make sure you have the right PPE on before you press the start button on your safety saw.
