It takes so many tools, and you’ll be working with so much heat and so many pressurised parts, that the danger may seem overwhelming.

But there’s nothing to worry about. Here is a list of the best tools for beginners to use when learning how to weld in a safe and effective way.
Welding Equipment

Welding Tools For Beginners

Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet

Cooperweld Welding Helmet

  • The welding helmet is the most basic and well-known piece of equipment for welding. It is an important part of the craft and a safety must.
  • The main goal of any type of welding helmet is to keep sparks and flames from scarring your face while you work and to keep heat from hurting your skin and eyes.
  • Auto-darkening helmets also protect your eyes from the bright lights that other welding tools and the hot metal itself give off.
  • The glass that covers the eyes is shaded so that only a certain amount of light can get through at once. This lets you see without hurting your eyes.

Welding Gloves

Gloves are pretty easy to understand. Welding gloves are made of layers of strong fabrics and insulation that keep heat and sparks from hurting your hands. Welding gloves are easy to find anywhere gloves are sold, and you need them for any kind of welding.

There are usually 2 types you need to be aware of:

  • MIG Welding Gloves – Are usually thicker and have padding on the back of the hand to protect the hand that is not being used to brace the hand that is being used to weld. If the glove gets too hot, you can easily take it off because it fits more loosely.
  • TIG Welding Gloves – When precision is important, these gloves are thinner and softer. TIG welding requires a lot of dexterity, and the gloves will be tighter so that the rod and torch can be moved more precisely.

Make sure you have the right gloves for the job.

MIG Welding Pliers

MIG pliers are easy to find online and in most hardware stores. They aren’t hard to find and aren’t expensive for what you can do with them.

They have several uses which include:

  • Removing the nozzle from the MIG gun – They come with circular clamps that make it easy to take nozzles off the MIG gun.
  • Loosen & tighten the contact tip – You’ll have to do this often because it will get worn out.
  • Cut 1/4″ Stick-Out – You don’t have to use a separate wire cutter, which saves you time.
  • Remove Weld Spatter – The tips of the pliers make it easier to clean the spatter out of the inside of the nozzle.

Welding Magnets

  • One of the most useful tools you will have in your kit is a welding magnet. Because of this, they are very useful when welding.
  • With a welding magnet, you don’t need clamps to hold pieces of metal in place, and you can easily move them around.
  • You can also put pieces of metal on them and weld them together at an angle.
  • In short, they make it possible to join pieces of sheet metal in ways that clamps would not. The more you use these, the more you’ll find to do with them.

Chipping Hammer

  • One thing that happens when you MIG weld or stick weld is that slag forms as the metal melts and forms the weld.
  • At times, this slag needs to be chipped away. This is the job of the chipping hammer.
  • Chipping hammers have a flat side and a pointed side that are best for different types of slag.
  • You might not use these very often, but they make welding much cleaner and easier to do.

Welding Framing Jig

  • A welding framing jig is not as important as many of the other things on this list, but it is still a nice thing to have.
  • A welding framing jig is a tool that lets you weld at angles of 90 degrees. You could do this with a welding magnet, but a framing jig gives you much more support while welding and lets you use heavier metal pieces.
  • Unlike magnets, it also lets you tack-weld multiple layers or components together at once, all at a perfect 90-degree angle.

Speed Square

  • You might use a speed square more than any of the other tools on this list. With your speed square, you can measure any piece parallel to another for a 90-degree cut or at any other angle.
  • A speed square is a tool for measuring angles. It has the shape of a right triangle and can be used to measure in many different ways at different angles. This is the one welding tool you will use the most. If you can’t measure, you can’t do much.

Metal Brush

  • A metal brush is like a chipping hammer in that you don’t think about it very often, but you use it all the time when you’re welding.
  • With a metal brush, you can clean up the top of cooled welds by getting rid of the slag and charring. This makes the whole thing look nice and clean.
  • Not all types of welding make slag, but the ones that do need both chipping hammers and metal brushes to do the job right.

Angle Grinder

  • If you do a lot of welding, an angle grinder can be a very helpful tool to have.
  • It can cut metal, for starters. You will always need to cut some metal stock to size. With a cut wheel, it’s surprisingly easy to cut anything from sheet metal to bar stock.
  • Angle grinders can also be used to get metal ready to be welded. You will need to clean the base metal to avoid problems like pores and cracks. You can do this with a wire brush, but an angle grinder is much faster.
  • Lastly, a welding angle grinder is a great way to clean up and finish welds. When there is a lot of slag left over, one way to clean it up is with an angle grinder. An angle grinder can also be used to polish the metal you are working on.

Sheet Metal Gauge

  • To weld well, you’ll need to know how thick the metal is that you’re using.
  • A steel metal gauge is a wheel with teeth that are spaced out in different ways to match the different standard widths of sheet metal. The sheet metal gauge is a tool that welders of any skill level can’t do without.
  • If you know how thick the sheet metal is, you can figure out a lot of other things about your project.
  • Most professional welders have a chart that tells them what settings to use for different thicknesses of metal sheet.
  • Also, it can be hard to tell one sheet of metal from another just by looking at it, so the gauge will be used all the time.

Soapstone

  • Even though the marking tool is not made of soap, it has a similar texture.
  • Soapstone is used as a marking tool that is easy to take off when you’re done. Imagine it as a piece of chalk that was made to write on metal.
  • Soapstone is better than something like graphite because it can handle high heat and flames from torches and other welding tools.
  • In addition to writing on the metal, it lets you draw complicated shapes, curved lines, and other designs.

Metal File

  • Like the angular grinder, the main purpose of the metal file is to smooth out rough edges and burrs on metal that has been cut.
  • Metal files are also used for a wide range of other metalworking projects, and you’ve probably used them before.
  • Angle grinders are good for removing larger chunks of material, but files are used to smooth things out and make them look nice.

C Clamp

  • C clamps have the shape of the letter “C.”
  • They can apply pressure from above and below at the same time and are used for a wide range of hardware projects, not just welding.
  • C clamps also let you put more pressure on whatever you need to clamp than pinch clamps or even some welding clamps. This lets you hold on to whatever you need to clamp much more securely.

Welding Boots

Vaultex Safety Boots Black

  • One of the most common and least talked about accidents at work is foot injuries. About 25% of all disability claims are made because of foot injuries that happened on the job.
  • With all of this in mind, you should protect your feet from the hot metal and heavy tools you’ll be using when you weld.
